Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to be an insurance student to join Gamma Iota Sigma?
NO! Gamma Iota Sigma is composed of students from all fields of study. Most of our members are insurance and risk management or financial planning majors, however we have members from various programs of study here at Olivet College.
Do you have to be an insurance and risk management or financial planning major to attend our meetings?
Everyone is invited to our meetings and to enroll in our department seminar, however our active members enjoy a large variety of benefits and truly get more out of Gamma Iota Sigma than our non-members (see benefits below).
How do I become a member of Gamma Iota Sigma?
Becoming a member of Gamma Iota Sigma is very simple! Just stop by the insurance office, room 408A, on the fourth floor of Mott! Ask someone in the office for the form to fill out (takes 1 minute) and then enclose your $70 new membership fee. Annual membership renewal dues are $50 each year at Olivet College thereafter.
WOW! $70? Why would I pay $70? Where is this money going? What are the benefits?
Take a deep breath, because for $70 a year you will become an active member and will be eligible for a whole bunch of fun trips! This $70 (along with our fundraising money) is used to subsidize a great part of the trips and events that Gamma Iota Sigma hosts! For the low fee of $70 you will enjoy all the benefits that Gamma Iota Sigma has to offer – including networking with peers and professionals on a local, national and international level, publication of your resume in our resume book and on our website, access to scholarships and internships, and you WILL be prepared for a rewarding career after graduation. Our employment rate before graduation is over 95%, so if you join, you WILL learn the proper skills to land the job you want!
What else is expected of me?
If you're earning a grade in our department seminar, you must participate in career preparation activities, and prepare portfolio exhibits. If you want to participate in our industry networking activities and trips, you must participate in fundraising. If you want to be successful in our program and in life, you must participate in community service projects.
When and where are the meetings held?
The meetings are at the same time and place every week! Every Wednesday in Mott 110 at 10:40 am.
If I know someone who would like to make a presentation at the general meetings who should I talk to?
If you know of anyone who would like to make a presentation at our general meeting, please contact our president, who sets the agenda.
How do I run for an officer's position?
First you must be an active member in order to apply for an officer's position. Ask the officer that holds the position that you're interested in, for the job description. If you're still interested, at a general membership meeting towards the end of the fall semester, have someone nominate you, or nominate yourself, complete an application, and submit your resume. You will go through an interview process with the president, president-elect, and advisor.
If I have any more questions what should I do?
Please stop by in Mott 408A, phone us at 269-749-6605, email us at gis@olivetcollege.edu, or contact our advisor.
