Clair V. Stevens, J.D.

Clair Stevens is Associate Professor of Insurance and Risk Management and a 1980 alumnus of Olivet College.  He is also a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School and has been a member of the Michigan Bar since 1985. Clair has instructed as an adjunct for several colleges since his graduation, primarily in curriculums of insurance, law and communications.  Clair was the Director of the Olivet College Insurance Program from 1983 to 1985.

Clair spent 20 years associated with the Armed Forces, 36 months of which was overseas with time in South East Asia.  He retired as a First Sergeant. 

Clair’s insurance career started as an office manager for a large independent agency in Okemos, Michigan.   He then moved to the property and casualty claims area as a claim representative for State Farm Insurance.  After progressing through several levels as a claim representative and holding reinspector/trainer positions, he worked over 14 years in various claims leadership positions.  During Clair’s time in fire claims he also was very active in State Farm’s Catastrophe program. He settled claims in different 11 catastrophes, ranging from earthquakes to hail and wind storms including two trips to Miami for hurricane Andrew.  Clair was instrumental in pioneering the organizational work for the catastrophe call center operation for State Farm.  He ended his 20+ year career responsible for managing the newly organized claims support operations for State Farm for the state of Michigan.

While with State Farm, he was nominated and received the first “Spirit of State Farm” award in Michigan for his leadership skills and ability to inspire, challenge and motivate others.  He also was nominated and named in State Farm’s “Mentors of the Year” program for the Great Lakes Zone which included Michigan, Illinois and Indiana.  Clair is married to Nyla ('92) and they have one daughter Jen.
